Pet Weight Loss

Cairns Vet Clinic and Hill's Pet Fit

Cairns Vet Clinic aims for the best vet care for your pet.  An important part of this is preventative health care and client education.  We have teamed with Hill's Pet Nutrition to provide Pet Fit: a free healthy weight and exercise program for portly pets.

Is your pet overweight?  There is an easy test you can do yourself at home.  If you aren't sure, come and see us about a healthy weight program for your pet.

Can I feel my pet's ribs?

The Body Condition Score (BCS) is a measure that tells you if your pet is at or above its ideal weight. One way vets test for your own pet's body condition is by checking just how easy it is to feel their ribs.

In a healthy pet you should easily be able to feel their ribs.

Facts about overweight pets

It's not just more Australian people who're suffering from obesity. More pets are too, with over 40% of dogs and over 30% of cats estimated to be clinically overweight or obese.
Extra weight is a significant danger to their health, increasing the risk of serious diseases like diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart disease, and painful osteoarthritis.
Studies with dogs have shown those on a controlled diet with lower weight and body fat can live two years longer than dogs whose diets and weights aren't controlled.
